Downing world No 1 is nice gift for Julian Wilson

JULIAN Wilson has got his 2015 world tour aspirations back on track and celebrated his birthday in style after knocking off world No.1 Gabriel Medina.

Wilson produced some of his most consistent surfing of the year to progress to the quarter-finals of the O'Neill Prime event in Brazil.

The 26 year old had only progressed past the third round on one occasion before recapturing his trademark power surfing and aerial prowess in the past few days.

Wilson edged out Medina in his fourth round heat before blowing Frenchman Joan Duru out of the water in round four.

Knocking off the word's current best would do wonders for the Coolum product's confidence after struggling for most of the year.

He sits in 21st position on the world rankings with only the top 22 to automatically requalify for next year's professional tour.

Wilson finished fifth last year and has often been cited by many as a likely future world champion.

He is set to compete at this month's famed Hawaiian Triple Crown.

Wilson was due to face Brazilian local Italo Ferrira overnight in the quarter-final.

He turned 26 yesterday.
