Dogcheck app shows dog’s weight in human form

A NEW website and app is forcing owners to confront their dog's weight problems by showing them what their pooch would look like if it was a person.

It's estimated 40 per cent of Australia's dog population is overweight or obese.

DogCheck by pet food company Black Hawk, uses a dog's age, weight and breed and then compares it to the healthy average weight before transforming the data into a human form.

Lucy Vader says she knew her long-haired dachshund Miffy was overweight but was "totally shocked" by Miffy's human representation.

Weighing 15kg, the nine-year-old's human weight was 95kg. It was in the obese range which could lead to problems with her pancreas, lungs and heart, and she was more prone to suffer from heat stress.

"She lives for food," Ms Vader said. "And she is quite anti-exercise. She likes to put the brakes on when we are out walking."

Miffy has a healthy diet of fresh meat and vegetables but her downfall is portion size.

"I just feed her a bit too much in terms of quantity," Ms Vader says, adding that Miffy will be eating less in future.
