Doctor with motor neurone disease raising awareness

A DOCTOR suffering from motor neurone disease (MND) will ride a gruelling 'million meters' from Brisbane to Sydney to raise money for others affected by the debilitating illness.

Dr Ian Davis previously spent his days caring for cancer patients until he received the devastating diagnosis of his own illness in September of 2011.

Since then, he has fought a constant battle with his health but that has not stopped him from raising money and awareness about MND.

Stopping at many towns along the way, Dr Davis will ride a custom made tandem bike with his friend Scott Sullivan, who also suffers from the disease.

Dr Davis said the idea for the 'million meters' ride came to him about three months ago," he said.

"As my mobility continues to deteriorate as a consequence of MND, I thought to my self that I needed to do something physical while I still could," he said.

"As the MND has predominantly affected my legs I knew that riding a regular upright bicycle would be impossible.

"Likewise for Scott, the MND has affected his arms and hands, so riding an upright bike would be difficult and more so dangerous."

Dr Davis approached engineers and bike designers and came up with the concept of a tandem recumbent bicycle.

"I can pedal and steer with my arms, while Scott can pedal with a traditional leg crank mechanism," he said.

. "What neither one of us could achieve alone, we will make possible by joining together."

The ride begins in Brisbane's City Square on May 3, and is expected to take about two weeks to reach Sydney.

The pair will pass through the Tweed on Sunday May 5, at approximately 7:30am.
