What electorate are you in? The boundaries have changed

WITH the election on, and recent changes made to electoral boundaries, there is sure to be confusion about what seat you are voting in.

For example voters in Nimbin now vote for Page candidates and voters in parts of Alstonville now vote for Richmond candidates.

In Alstonville, the Page boundary follows Eltham Rd to Pearces Creek Rd, then follows Pearces Creek Rd to Maguires Creek.

From there it follows Maguires Creek to Johnstons Rd, then follows Johnstons Rd to Teven Rd, then Teven Rd to Gap Rd, and along the Bruxner Hwy to the Pacific Hwy.

It means some people in the outskirts of Alstonville will vote in Richmond, while the rest of the village will continue to vote in Page.

The Australian Electoral Commission made changes to electoral boundaries in February this year. A redistribution process occurs for a few reasons;

  • a change to state ot territory entitlement for the number of members in the House of Representatives,
  • the number of voters in the electorate deviates from the national average significantly, or
  • a period of seven years has elapsed since the last redistribution.

So it is essentially a numbers game rather than being able to vote in the electorate that most impacts your everyday life.
