PALM trees, soft sand and global beats: It's not every day you get to party on a beach in Brazil.

For one local DJ, this daydream was recently made a reality.

"It was such an epic adventure," smiled Flow Theory, aka Ashley Zadel.

A new resident to the Coffs Coast, Ash is one more example of the diverse group of people who've chosen to call this region home and create successful careers from their coastal base.

"I came all the way from London to live here - my girlfriend grew up here," he said.

"The alternative dance scene here is very similar to London, actually - lots of small groups spread over a large area."

"The music I play is progressive, minimal trance - which I would have thought was quite underground."

"But it's pretty much popular music in this area!"

Settling into the area over the past year was challenging but ultimately satisfying, according to Ash.

"It's a great lifestyle, the beaches are amazing, even the drinking water tastes good," he laughed.

And it seems living on the coast has been great training for Ash's Brazilian gig - performing with humidity, and sand.

Held in Bahia, Brazil, the Universo Paralello Festival is a mecca for alternative dance music fans, attracting upwards of 20,000 people from all around the world.

The event runs for seven days, and culminates in a massive night of New Year's Eve celebrations.

"All the Brazilians wear white on New Year's Eve," said Flow Theory, "and it looks freaking amazing under the UV lights."

All that's missing is a hammock and a cocktail in a coconut.
