George Pell gives evidence for the first time at the royal commission into child sex abuse

CATHOLIC leader Cardinal George Pell could again be brought before a royal commission on child sexual abuse, in the wake of new allegations against him.

Commission hearings on Wednesday in Ballarat were told of allegations Cardinal Pell offered a bribe to a victim to keep quiet about abuse by convicted sex offender Gerald Ridsdale.

Mr Pell on Wednesday rejected the claim.

He also denied he knew of pedophile priests in the diocese where he once worked. Another victim, Paul Tatchell, yesterday reportedly told the inquiry that time would tell if Cardinal Pell had "an ounce of courage" to take responsibility for the covering-up of child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.

His comments came as Prime Minister Tony Abbott, one of the nation's most prominent political Catholics, told reporters it was up to Cardinal Pell if he decided to return to Australia to speak to the commission.

Cardinal Pell has already been a witness at hearings and has promised to answer any further questions.
