Dangerous surf warning for NSW coast

SURF Life Saving NSW is warning of dangerous surf conditions for much of NSW and advising against all coastal activities from Sydney to the Queensland border until Friday.

An easterly swell is expected to reach 3.5m in some areas with a swell period of up to 11 seconds.

Conditions are expected to impact the coastline from Tuesday morning, peak on Wednesday and Thursday and begin to ease on Friday.

Following the drowning of a fisherman at North Curl Curl Beach at Sydney's Northern Beaches on Saturday, SLSNSW Lifesaving Manager, Andy Kent, is pleading with people to heed warnings and assess the conditions before heading out near the ocean this week.

"The Bureau of Meteorology is advising that this is a large weather system that will affect a significant area of the coastline for a number of days and I would ask people to think hard and reconsider before putting themselves in danger," Mr Kent said.

"With a big swell and strong sea-breezes a lot of the NSW coast is going to be dangerous and unpredictable and we would advise against people swimming at unpatrolled locations while also staying away from rock platforms and headlands until these conditions moderate."

SAFETY TIPS

  •  Avoid rock fishing and water activities on exposed beaches/rock-shelves
  •  Only swim at patrolled beaches, between the red & yellow flags
  •  Check the official Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast before undertaking rock fishing and water activities ( )
  •  Boaties should seek advice from Marine Rescue NSW and always wear a lifejacket ( )
