LIFE is looking up for Proserpine River crocodile Fat Guts.

Less than a month after he was shot in the neck with a bow and arrow, witnesses have reported Fat Guts is as healthy as ever.

He's even been seen with an old flame - a 2.5 metre female saltwater crocodile named Ginger.

Whitsunday Crocodile Safari owner Steve Watson said even though it wasn't mating season, Fat Guts and Ginger had been observed lounging around on mudflats together.

"He's still hanging out with his girlfriend," Mr Watson said.

"It's not breeding season but they tend to hang out with females like that."

Fat Guts has retained a memento of his encounter with a bow and arrow - the shaft has snapped off, with the arrow-head remaining buried in his neck.

He has also become a minor celebrity since his brush with death and resulting media attention.

Mr Watson said there had been more boats than usual in the river searching for the renowned croc.

"We've had a few up there, they're obviously out there just looking for crocs," he said.

"He (Fat Guts) has just been doing what he usually does, basking."

The culprit who shot Fat Guts is yet to be found, and the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection has encouraged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Crocodiles are protected animals under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and it is illegal to take or harm them.

The maximum penalty for doing so is $24,750.
