Cowboys dump player despite identity mix-up

NFL: One day after the Dallas Cowboys dumped wide receiver Lucky Whitehead following reports he had been arrested for shoplifting, police have admitted they got the wrong man.

The Cowboys terminated Whitehead's $1.58 million contract on Monday after it was reported he had been arrested in Virginia and had then failed to appear in court.

However, Whitehead's agent Dave Rich announced on Tuesday that the 25-year-old had been falsely identified and the case has been dropped.

Despite the mix-up, the Cowboys have ruled out reinstating Whitehead.

Cowboys executive vice president and CEO Stephen Jones said that the team's decision stemmed from "a culmination of things over a period of time”.

"We have made a decision and moved on,” Jones said.

A lawyer for the county said the man arrested did not have an ID and had been "verbally identified” by the arresting officer as the Cowboys receiver.

Rich said police had later looked at surveillance video from the convenience store, which revealed the man in question was not Whitehead.

"Lucky is thrilled justice was served and his name was cleared,” Rich said.

"It's a shame that he came into town to do a camp for kids and he ended up getting cut by his professional football team.”
