Council pushes for koala protection in Pac Highway upgrade
BALLINA Council will lobby all agencies involved with the Pacific Highway upgrade between Woodburn and Ballina to see if extra koala protection measures can be put in place.
Mayor David Wright proposed a Mayoral Minute that was supported unanimously by councillors.
It asks that the council write to state and federal agencies asking that, if the current preferred route is to go ahead, extra koala food trees be planted, there be an increase in culverts and overhead bridges and compensatory plantings of at least 50% greater than the flora removed, and that koala fencing be put in place along the route prior to any construction.
Koala populations around Meerschaum Vale, Blackwall Range and Coolgardie have been identified as a key source for breeding and dispersal across the region and there is a strong community campaign to have the preferred route changed.
