NRL: The Sydney Roosters have appointed Kangaroos and NSW backrower Boyd Cordner as a co-captain to work alongside existing skipper Jake Friend this season.

Friend was an inspirational leader for the Roosters during a testing season last year where the club failed to make the finals for the first time since Trent Robinson took over as head coach in 2013.

The Roosters hooker was rewarded for a strong individual season with a place on the Four Nations tour with the Kangaroos and a maiden Test jumper.

Friend, 26, will also captain the NRL All Stars side against the Indigenous All Stars in Newcastle next month.

Cordner, 24, was one of four vice-captains appointed under Anthony Minichiello the year the Roosters won the premiership in 2013 and is also strongly in contention to be appointed captain for the NSW Blues this year.

His appointment as co-captain is a natural progression for a player who has been identified as a future leader since joining the Roosters as a teenager.

Roosters coach Robinson initially appointed Friend and Mitchell Pearce as co-captains at the start of the 2015 season when Minichiello retired, but the halfback was stripped of the leadership after Australia Day last year.

Robinson has also shown a penchant for sharing the leadership responsibilities in is time as a head coach, also opting for co-captains during his time with French club Les Catalans in the UK Super League.

"Like Jake, Boyd is someone who has the respect of both his peers and the coaching staff. In their own way, Jake and Boyd are vital leaders with a huge amount of experience and I have no doubt that they'll work well together,” Robinson said.
