Community mourns death of popular young sportsman

THE sudden death of former Toowoomba Grammar School leader Tom Lyons has stunned his school community and those who knew and loved him.

Mr Lyons, 21, collapsed shortly after crossing the finish line in yesterday's Hell of the West triathlon in Goondiwindi.

Despite the best efforts of nearby medical personnel, the Nobby man could not be revived.

Toowoomba Grammar School headmaster Peter Hauser this morning remembered Mr Lyons as an outstanding young man.

A gifted leader, Mr Lyons was senior prefect (school captain) in his graduating class of 2009.

"He was a young man of high intellect and diligence," Mr Hauser said.

His academic efforts earned him an OP1, which he used to go on to study law at university.

That year he also captained the school's first XV rugby union side and was vice captain of the first XI cricket team.

"His post-match addresses were just outstanding because he was so smart.

"(He was) a very humble young man and had the great ability to relate to everyone."

Mr Lyons was so highly regarded in his school community that Mr Hauser invited him back a few years after graduation to address academic staff on youth issues.

"We remember him as an exceptional student leader.

"It (his death) will go right through the school community."

The cause of Mr Lyons' death is being investigated.
