THE Sunshine Coast is Queensland's healthiest region.

Queensland Health's Self-Reported Health Status 2012 revealed 11.8% (33,000 people) of the Coast population smoked daily in 2011-12, compared with the state's average of 14.4%.

Almost half of the population had never smoked, 3.1% smoked but not daily, and 36% were ex-smokers.

Figures showed adults who smoked were more likely to be young, and the percentage of people aged 35 to 44 and 65 to 74 who smoked daily decreased by 50%.

Adults who never smoked were more likely to be female and young, and the percentage of people who had never smoked was 53-56% higher in people aged 18 to 24 than people aged 45 to 74.

However alcohol-consumption levels were on par with the rest of Queensland.

About 40,000 adults (14%) abstained from alcohol consumption, while about 180,000 adults (64%) consumed alcohol at lifetime low-risk levels and about 100,000 adults (35%) at single-occasion, low-risk levels.

Almost 60,000 (22%) people consumed alcohol at lifetime risky levels.

In terms of healthy eating, we eat more fruit and vegetables than most regions.

In 2001-12, 56% (about 158,000 adults) consumed the recommended two serves of fruit daily.

Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift said simple lifestyle adjustments could make a vital difference to a person's short and long-term health.

"Visiting your GP to get an overall health check is a great place to start," she said.

"Also, identifying areas you can change to boost quality of life and reduce your lifetime risk of cancer."
