LAST season was one to forget for the Newcastle Jets, winning just three games on the way to finishing last on the A-League ladder.

Controversial owner Nathan Tinkler then had his licence terminated by Football Federation Australia, after running up debts of $2.7 million.

But what a difference an off-season can make.

Under new coach Scott Miller, the Jets opened with a win against Wellington, pushed Sydney FC all-the-way in a 1-0 loss, and last weekend beat titleholder Melbourne Victory.

Defender Daniel Mullen said the results had given the side plenty of belief ahead of tonight's clash with Melbourne City.

"We're a hard team to break down," Mullen said.

"I think Victory, Sydney and Wellington set the benchmark for attacking play in the A-League - we've faced all three of them now and only conceded two goals, so we're going to take a lot of confidence from that."

The danger man for the Jets defenders will be City's Socceroo Aaron Mooy.

Rated the A-League's best player by Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou, Mooy has been outstanding in City's opening three games.

His free-kick prowess put the ball on a platter for Patrick Kisnorbo to head home City's first goal in its 3-1 win over Central Coast last Sunday.

"You could see in the game (against the Mariners) there were a couple of free kicks where you thought he wasn't going to shoot and he did, and it took a good save from the goalkeeper to keep him out," Mullen said.
