Club Lennox up for community award

THE Lennox Head community showed plenty of heart to get Club Lennox opened this year, and now the club is a finalist in the ClubsNSW Clubs and Community Awards for the Heart of the Community category.

Geoff Martin, Club Lennox GM, said he had been encouraged to enter the club in the awards after attending a ClubsNSW training session where he spoke about the effort to reopen the club.

It's well known that Club Lennox opened its doors on Boxing Day last year, having been shut for just more than 12 months when the Sydney-based Ramsgate Group shut the doors of the bowlo.

The community rallied, raised $200,000, the Lennox club deamalgamated from Ramsgate and Club Lennox opened with a focus on the club being for everyone in the community.

Now, Club Lennox has 2200 members - the former club had 1400 when it closed.

Mr Martin, who has been in the club and pub industry for 35 years, said the Club Lennox story was unique.

He said there was a time when struggling clubs would amalgamate with larger ones to survive - as happened at Lennox - or, smaller clubs would join forces.

"To deamalgamate, that is unique," Mr Martin said.

"The community bought the club back."

He said he nominated the club for the award to give some accolades to the community.

"It's recognition for what was done - what the community did to get the club open," he said.

The awards night is in Sydney on Friday.
