Clive Palmer's wife Anna may take on Gold Coast seat

CLIVE Palmer says his wife Anna is seeking preselection for the Gold Coast seat of Gaven to take on independent MP Dr Alex Douglas.

The news comes as Dr Douglas quit the PUP in August, alleging a "jobs for the boys" culture.

He said yesterday that he doubted the Sunshine Coast federal MP and PUP leader would run a candidate at the next state election.

Mr Palmer said Dr Douglas was mistaken.

"It's interesting that Alex Douglas says that because we have got three candidates that want to stand in the seat of Gaven his seat," Mr Palmer told the ABC.

"There are three great candidates going up for preselection in the next two weeks to make a final determination, and one of them is my wife Anna.

"She has put her name in to stand against Alex Douglas at the next election.

"I think we have got a lot of PUP supporters inside Gaven and, after all, it was held by our party until Alex Douglas spat the dummy.

"Now it is a chance to return back to the Palmer United Party, maybe under my wife or maybe under one of the other two candidates."

Dr Douglas downplayed the possibility of Mrs Palmer running against him.

"This is just: 'I'm angry with Alex Douglas because he stated the obvious'," he said.

Mr Palmer said he would also have PUP candidates in Mudgeeraba, Maryborough and Kawana.

The Sunshine Coast MP, who represents the Maroochydore-based seat of Fairfax, has already come under fire for spending too much time away from his Coast constituents and parliament.

He often spends overnight at his Gold Coast home.

Mrs Palmer gave birth to the couple's second daughter in December last year.

Mr Palmer took to Twitter at the time to reveal the baby's six names.

"Our beautiful baby daughter has been named Lucy," Palmer tweeted.

"Middle names are Diamond Stelina Mary Anna Nancy. She has lots of love & lots of good examples to follow from all the women in ... the Palmer family. Girls Rock!" Palmer's subsequent Tweet read.
