Clive Palmer changes party name one day before deadline

CLIVE Palmer has changed the name of his political party one day before registrations close.

The billionaire said he was facing a three-month battle with the Electoral Commission to use the name "United Australia Party".

The party will now be registered as the Palmer United Party to contest the federal election in September.

"What we stand for is far more important than our name," said the mining magnate in a statement released Sunday morning.

"So many groups are trying to stop and undermine the party efforts to provide good government. I now understand the practical hurdles that Bob Katter and his party faced when he tried to register his party."
