AT just 13 years old Bridie Middleton is already becoming a song writing sensation, taking out a prestigious Australia-wide competition.

Bridie penned her song This is Me when she was only in Year Seven and it has now taken out the youth division of the Tamworth National Country Songwriting Competition.

The Pittsworth teen travelled to the Tamworth Country Music Awards last week to accept the John P Toomey Perpetual Trophy for Songwriting by a junior or youth songwriter.

With her mum entering her recordings, Bridie didn't know about her success until she made the semi-finals of the competition with two of her songs.

"I was pretty surprised," Bridie said.

"It's amazing. I never would have thought I could win something like that."

Bridie explained This is Me was the first song she had ever written as part of a school assignment which she unsurprisingly got an A+ for.

"I just wrote down some lyrics in class one day and then came up with the song and 'hey this is me', that's where the lines started," she said.

"It's about being myself and just telling everyone that I am who I am."

Since Bridie wrote This is Me, she has been writing all the time with ideas constantly making their way onto paper.

"I started off in country music and I do still love it, but I like folk music and indie story stuff too," she said.

Bridie got into music when she was just six, with the Broxburn Music Club in Pittsworth, which she is still part of.

Concordia College's head of college Michael Kaiser commended Bridie on her achievement.

"As a college community, we extend our heartiest congratulations to Bridie for not only her success, but for her dedication, commitment and tenacity in pursuing her passion in music," he said.

"We wish Bridie every success and look forward to supporting her in her endeavours."
