Chris Bowen to release book on Labor Party before election

ONE of the casualties of the failed attempt on Prime Minister Julia Gillard's leadership has revealed plans to release a book before the September 14 election.

Chris Bowen, who resigned as tertiary education minister after he supported Kevin Rudd in the failed leadership coup, will use the book to outline his vision for a mass, participatory Labor Party as well as his economic blueprint for turning people's aspirations into reality.

The backbencher will also share his thoughts on how the party should govern and respond to changes in society, and the reasons he joined the ALP as a 15-year-old.

"Labor can and should reclaim the mantle of liberalism," Mr Bowen said.

"There are plenty of books about what is wrong about the Labor Party. This book will be different, it will be about why Labor can and must play a dominant role in Australian politics."

Mr Bowen has in the past said rank-and-file members, and not just the caucus, should get a say in who leads the party.

The book, to be released mid-year, will be published by Melbourne University Publishing. It said the book would be a "passionate clarion call to Labor's heartland".

"We are delighted to add Chris Bowen to our stable of eminent political authors. MUP has a proud tradition of publishing books that contribute to the national debate, and Mr Bowen's timely book will certainly spark an important conversation in the lead up to this year's federal election," MUP CEO Louise Adler said.
