Child killer given 28 years for Melbourne schoolgirl death

A NOTORIOUS Victorian child murderer has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for the killing of a Melbourne schoolgirl in the 1990s.

The Victorian Supreme Court on Thursday sentenced Leslie Alfred Camilleri to nearly 30 years for the murder for 13 year old Glenroy student Prue Bird in 1992.

Camilleri was also convicted for the murders of two raped Bega schoolgirls in 1997, and will serve the latest sentence concurrently with his life term in prison for those crimes.

He pleaded guilty to the murder of Prue Bird, but reportedly gave conflicting evidence of the killing, which contributed to the lengthy sentence.
