Cenotaph move to cater for bigger crowds next year

THERE will be more room at the Ballina Cenotaph for those attending services marking the centenary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli next year.

Ballina RSL Sub-Branch president Bill Moore said the cenotaph would move further west in Memorial Park after this year's Remembrance Day service in November.

There is a land swap proposed for the small car parking area at the western end of the park currently owned by the Ballina RSL Club and some Crown land on the northern edge of the park to make the park a more rectangular shape. But a report to the June Ballina Shire Council meeting said the cenotaph could be moved without that land swap taking place as the cenotaph's new position was in the confines of the current parcel of Crown land, which the council manages.

Mr Moore said the new position of the cenotaph would provide more space for the expected large crowds at next year's Dawn Service and morning service on Anzac Day.

"We want to fit more people within the bounds of the park," he said.

He also said the move would mean the cenotaph was further from the large fig tree in the park that had exposed roots, which were a potential trip hazard.

He said while 2015 marked the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, other centenary commemorations like the centenary of the Returned and Services League and the end of the First World War would follow.

The council donated $25,000 to the cost of moving the cenotaph.
