Multi-million-dollar revamp for Ballina's Captain Cook Park

A WATER play space for children would be a key feature of a multi-million-dollar revamp of Captain Cook Park.

A draft masterplan for the riverfront park in Ballina will be considered by the council as Reserve Trust manager at its meeting on Thursday.

Landscape architecture consultant Red Belly Landscape Design was engaged to prepare the masterplan.

As well as the water play park, the plan includes a new public jetty, boardwalks, an ornamental garden, grassed plaza area with a performance stage, picnic shelters, barbecue facilities and new public toilets.

The council has estimated it could cost between $2.5 million and $2.3 million in total.

But the masterplan has been designed so the works can be staged as funding becomes available.

The proposed water playground would be an important part of the revamp, and several councillors have previously said it should be a priority for Captain Cook Park.

A "splash pad" featuring an "iconic local water creature" has been suggested in the masterplan.

Splash pads have no standing water and are favoured in public places because there is little risk of drowning.

They have ground nozzles that spray water upwards.

A new jetty is also proposed in the draft masterplan.

"This (jetty) will greatly enhance the park as a destination for the boating community and increasethe visual interest of the park generally," the report states.

The masterplan for Captain Cook Park will be considered by the council as Reserve Trust managers at its meeting on Thursday, and it is expected that the plan will then be placed on public exhibition.
