Call to ban fishing in Ballina’s Shaws Bay
EAST Ballina woman Jan Brady has launched a petition to ban fishing in Shaws Bay.
Ms Brady's move was prompted by the killing of an estuary cod in the Ballina bay a month ago.
The estuary cod is protected in NSW, and individuals taking them can face fines of up to $11,000.
There are about half a dozen or so large cod in the bay.
Ms Brady, who is a regular walker along North Wall, said Shaws Bay was a tourist attraction for Ballina, and the fish in it should all be protected.
Her petition is calling on the State Government to make Shaws Bay a sanctuary and to ban fishing.
She said she had plenty of positive reaction to her initial call in the Advocate.
Those wishing to sign the petition can do so when Ms Brady sets up a table for a few hours at the Marine Rescue tower on North Wall from 6.30am on Friday.
The petition also can be signed at the East Ballina Newsagency and the Shaws Bay Takeaway shop.
