Calls for Scott Morrison to resign over Manus Island riot

TWO Labor Senators have backed The Greens call for Immigration Minister Scott Morrison to resign over the Manus Island riot last week, but Prime Minister Tony Abbott has backed his senior colleague.

The Senators, West Australian Sue Lines and New South Wales' Doug Cameron, on Monday echoed Greens Leader Christine Milne's call for Mr Morrison's resignation.

Sen Lines said the death of an Iranian asylum seeker during the riot meant Mr Morrison "has blood on his hands", while Sen Cameron said he would like to see the Minister step down.

While Opposition Leader Bill Shorten did not go as far as his caucus colleagues, he said just wanted "someone who knows what's going on" in the role.

Mr Abbott on Sunday said "you don't want a wimp running border protection", while a raft of senior Coalition colleagues have come out in support of Mr Morrison's ministerial performance.
