Caitlyn masters Gaga with a country twang

FIRST Taylor Swift and now Lady Gaga.

They are among the hottest names in pop music and Gympie X Factor contestant Caitlyn Shadbolt did not flinch in lending her voice to some of their biggest hits.

A week ago it was Swift's recent No.1 hit Shake It Off and on Sunday night she tackled Gaga's emotive You and I.

Caitlyn's bar-raising performance was again judged by the nation and she had a nervous wait with everything on the line.

The Gympie Times went to print before the live verdict and Channel Seven kept the result tightly under wraps after voting closed midday yesterday.

Mentor Ronan Keating chose Gaga's You and I and the selection raised eyebrows.

But fans needn't have worried. The song was given a complete new lease on life by Caitlyn, flanked by dancers and projections of towering powerlines behind her.

The Gympie singer rode the wave of her performance, hitting the big notes with precision while showing more depth playing her guitar.

Caitlyn's family watched the live show from the comfort of their home this week after spending the weekend before in Sydney.

Mum Helen was impressed with the performance after her initial jitters over the unexpected song choice.

"Sensational," she said.

"So good and positive all round."

Keating's gamble paid off and the comments from the X Factor judges had all of Gympie smiling with their praise.

Judges Dannii Minogue and Natalie Bassingthwaighte needed to be reminded the song was in fact a Gaga original such was Caitlyn's ownership of her cover.

The real interest in last night's live verdict was the ranking of saved contestants - an X Factor first.

CATCH tomorrow's edition of The Gympie Times for the full reaction to last night's X Factor verdict and announcement ranking saved contestants.
