Byron braces for wave of schoolies
BYRON Bay hospital staff are bracing themselves for an onslaught of drunk and drug-affected teenagers turning up in the emergency department next week.
Schoolies Week is always one of the toughest times of the year for health workers, Byron Bay Medical Staff Council spokesman Dr Greg Gover said.
"It's all still relatively quiet. Both we and the ambulance service, along with all the community schoolies groups, have been preparing for them to come," he said.
"We expect to feel the full brunt next week.
"Our local doctors remain very concerned about the impact of alcohol-fuelled violence and the harm we're seeing in our community."
More than 10,000 school leavers are expected to attend next week's revelry in Byron Bay.
