Bruce Highway funding 'a stunt'

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard's pledge to spend $4 billion over the next 10 years to fix the Bruce Hwy has been derided as a stunt.

Member for Hinkler Paul Neville said $1.76 billion of that was just a re-announcement of old money.

"All Labor is doing is furiously moving money around to make it look good in the lead-up to the election," he said.

Mr Neville said Ms Gillard had promised $50 million to fix Yeppen Plains Rd near Rockhampton, but the sum required to lift it above the flood plain was about $300 million.

He said the $50 million that had been allocated was coming from a project earlier promised to Gladstone for a port access road.

Mr Neville said he had been part of a convoy of Coalition MPs that travelled the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns in July.

"We ran a survey in our electorates," he said.

"We know what needs to be done to fix the highway."

Member for Wide Bay and Opposition spokesman on infrastructure and transport Warren Truss said he was disappointed there was no mention of the stretch between Curra and Childers.
