Brosque ready for return to Socceroos, says teammate

FOOTBALL: Alex Wilkinson says Ange Postecoglou should look no further than Sydney FC teammate Alex Brosque to boost the Socceroos' ailing World Cup qualifying campaign.

Brosque has not played in the green and gold since the last World Cup qualifiers in 2013.

But, even at 33 and a year after contemplating retirement due to an ongoing hamstring issue, Brosque is in "great form” says Wilkinson ahead of the Sky Blues' A-League clash with Adelaide United tonight.

The striker has scored in four of the Sky Blues' seven games this season, playing no small part in their rise to the top of the ladder.

"He's obviously had his troubles with his injuries over the last year, but he got a solid pre-season under his belt and his start to the season was as good as anyone in the league,” Wilkinson said.

"It would be fantastic if he got called up again. He'd be a worthy addition to the Socceroos for sure.”

In fact, Wilkinson, 32, hopes both he and Brosque can be back in the Socceroos squad.

Wilkinson represented his country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but the central defender fell out of favour with Postecoglou after the friendly against England in May this year.

"You always hold out hope,” Wilkinson said of a call-up. "I've loved my time in the national team, it's definitely been the highlight of my career to date.”

For now, both players will be focused on maintaining Sydney's momentum against a side that, despite sitting at the other end of the ladder without a win, won't be underestimated.

The Reds have won four of their past six clashes with the Sky Blues and kept a clean sheet on each of their last four league visits to Allianz Stadium, outscoring the home side 9-0 across those fixtures.
