Horror movie fan given fright as burgler breaks in

A HORROR movie turned real for Rockhampton's Dianne Barnett at the weekend.

She was home alone watching Stephen King's Rose Red on Sunday afternoon when she got up for a toilet break.

Hurrying back to the lounge room, she noticed the screen door of her high-blocked house was open (she's not sure if it was locked). She then saw the hulking figure of a stranger in the kitchen.

"He was just standing there," Dianne said yesterday, recalling the frightening incident. "I screamed and yelled and he just bolted."

Dianne followed the intruder out of the house and down the front steps.

A couple driving past saw the commotion and stopped. The man stayed with Dianne; the woman jumped back in the car and followed the intruder but he ran out of sight.

When Dianne went back inside, she realised her bag had been stolen from her bedroom. It contained a wallet with a large sum of cash, house keys, key cards and personal documents.

Nothing else was taken.

Dianne praised the police and the good Samaritans who stopped but she was clearly shaken.

"I'm shaking just talking to you. I didn't sleep last night," she said.

"Now that I think about it, I saw something lumpy underneath his shirt but I can't remember what colour his shirt was.

"All I can remember is that he had dark skin, dark hair and was wearing a pair of shorts."

Dianne's husband Leyland was in St Lawrence at the time of the theft.

"I was shocked when I heard," he said. "He is very brazen because High St is a busy street and you don't expect that to happen on a busy road. He must have been casing the house."

The Barnetts were yesterday installing new locks on their home.

"It's an awful feeling, knowing there was someone in your house," Dianne said.
