Bravery awards for duo

TWO Ballina Shire residents were this week presented with commendations for brave conduct.

Keen local surfer Bernard McCaffery, of East Ballina, rescued two tourists at Tallow Beach, Byron Bay, on November 27, 2008, and Brian Dell - president of the Lennox Head-Alstonville Surf Life Saving Club - came to the aid of a man and his son in the surf near Lennox Point in July 2010.

The awards were presented on Monday by the Governor-General, Quentin Bryce.

Both men are modest heroes who say they acted on instinct. Both have had connections with the surf for a long time.
