Bosses urged to give workers jobs that lowered risk of RSI

A QUEENSLAND law firm has warned of a spike in workers considering compensation claims for Repetitive Strain Injury.

Slater & Gordon workplace injury lawyer James Mourdhuj said bosses in manufacturing, assembly lines and construction industries had to make sure workers were given different jobs to lower the risk of RSI.

"The injuries are occurring because there has been a failure to rotate duties or give adequate rest to workers who are performing the same duties day-in, day-out," he said.

"Regular breaks also helps reduce the risk of injury as it gives the body time to rest and recover."

The Australian Industry Group, which represents employers, agrees RSI is an issue to be addressed, but said most workplaces already had that in hand.

Director Mark Goodsell said he was not aware of a rash of claims for compensation, but confirmed it was something to be taken seriously.

"Most companies that have very manual work have automated it or taken on practices to mitigate risk," he said.

"The greater risk can be on production lines, where you are standing in one position doing one movement over and over and over again.

"Sensible employees and employers are aware of those things."

Mr Mordhuj said those who might be concerned about RSI should contact a doctor immediately.

"The primary symptom is pain, but it also includes stiffness, a tingling sensation or numbness in the fingertips, as well as a loss of strength and grip in the hands," he said.

"They should not be ignored."
