Boomers can claim medal, says US star

BASKETBALL: Klay Thompson has backed the Boomers to claim a historic first Olympics medal.

Australia will hit the floor tomorrow morning against France (3.15am) with arguably the best squad in its history.

If Andrew Bogut (pictured) overcomes his injury, the Boomers will have five players - Aron Baynes, Joe Ingles, Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova - with NBA experience.

Thompson, a former teammate of Bogut at the Warriors, said the Aussies were a team to watch.

"They're a big team, they're experienced and they have good guard play,” the 26-year-old USA squad member said.

"Andrew's (Bogut) a great defensive player and I'm sure they will ask him to do a lot on that team.

"They should have a great chance to medal in Rio.”

Star guard Paddy Mills, who'll face off with San Antonio Spurs teammate Tony Parker against France, said the French players were "huge” and talented.
