Couple saved from boat capsizing in the Clarence at Yamba

UPDATE 5.30PM: DEX photojournalist Debrah Novak has spoken to the couple who were saved from the boat that capsized in the Clarence at Yamba.

The survivors of the Yamba Bar rescue were Port Stephen sailors Alex and Kaye Kondra and their dog Justice.

UPDATE: Kirra Innes from Wooloweyah and her boyfriend Michael Sergeant were checking the surf when they saw three boats run into trouble at Yamba break wall.

They called for help.

Speaking at the scene Ms Innes said there was a catamaran, a mono hull and another boat trying to cross the bar.

With 10ft swell at the break wall a rogue set came through, according the Ms Innes and one of the boats was toppled by the wave.

Yamba Surf Lifesaving crews responded as well as a Westpac Rescue Chopper.

A male, female and a dog were rescued from the boat.

Ms Innes said she felt scared and sick when she saw what happened.

A fishing charter led the other two boats in.

 

UPDATE - 3.20PM: A tweet from Surf Life Saving NSW's State Operations Centre (@SLSNSW_SOC) says an inflatable rescue boat from Yamba SLSC has successfully rescuerd two people after their vessel was overturned.

 

EARLIER: Emergency services are responding to reports that a boat has capsized in the Clarence River, Yamba.
