Bikie bill passes parliament

POLICE have been given the power to declare gangs "criminal organisations" under legislation passed in NSW Parliament late Monday.

The new laws, which if enforced, ban gang members from associating with each other and impact on their ability to apply for firearms and liquor licences, retain key elements of the Queensland legislation which recently withstood a High Court challenge from the Finks motorcycle club.

NSW Attorney Greg Smith said the laws would enable police to protect the public from gangs "whose sole purpose is to commit crimes and terrorise the community".
