Bike bandits steal fuel for good measure

BRAZEN thieves who stole a disabled Bungawalbin man's only means of transport around his farm - a modified quad bike - returned to his property to steal petrol when the quad broke down.

Desperate to see the two-year-old $8000 Yamaha Bruin 350cc quad returned, Alex Dougall is offering a $1000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the thieves.

Mr Dougall, who is crippled by arthritis, had the throttle of the distinctive blue quad bike modified to suit his needs.

"It's the only means of transport around the property, I can't walk," he said.

"If I don't get the quad bike back I'm going to have to buy another one."

When Mr Dougall and his partner, Joan Jenson, returned home on July 17, just after 4.30pm, they saw the gate was ajar.

"They wrenched the padlock off the front gate, went down 80 metres of driveway, wrenched the lock off the house door to try and get the shed keys but we'd moved them," he said.

"So they wrenched the lock off the shed and hot wired the quad bike and drove it out."

Watched by Mr Dougall's neighbour, the thieves didn't get far.

"An orange SS Holden ute was seen by reliable people on our road racing down the road with the quad bike following," he said.

"They ran out of petrol in the quad bike after a couple of hundred metres, so they came racing back with the ute and stole a five litre container of petrol."

Once the quad was refuelled, Mr Dougall said, the two vehicles were seen on Duke Rd before they turned onto Myall Creek Rd and then Tuckerbox Rd, where part of the quad bike was found.

"What was done should be a warning to all rural dwellers to secure their properties," he said.
