Costa Georgiadis talks bees, bugs to support seed giveaway

CHARISMATIC television personality Costa Georgiadis embarked on a tour of the Northern Rivers yesterday to discuss the benefits of The Northern Star's seed give-away.

The ABC Gardening Australia host drew strong crowds, with quizzical gardeners and fans filling Scott's Newsagency for his Lismore stopover.

Topics included general growing tips, such as proper plant feeding, increasing garden biodiversity and, importantly, attracting more bees for better pollination.

Costa believes building and supporting the number of bees and bugs in your backyard, and eliminating pesticide use where possible, is crucial.

"If you wanted to, you could get a native bee hive. They cost upward of $350 to $450, but that's an investment," he said.

"If you buy it, in 12 months you split it. You have two. In 24 months you have four.

"In my case, I got mine from a neighbour down the street and then I split it and donated it to my local school.

"By the time the kids leave school, there'll be 64 (hives) in Year 6.

"Or, you can go the other way and build a bug hotel."

Additionally, Costa encouraged increased community support for local and national farmers.

Lismore resident Mel Jones and her excited little girl Jemima relished the opportunity to meet the gardening guru.

"It was unreal. I love him. He's very, very down to Earth and he makes gardening fun," Ms Jones said.

Costa also visited Ballina and Murwillumbah news-agencies yesterday.
