ROCKHAMPTON'S Mackinnley Bowden is about to take a big step in the Big Apple towards making his dream come true.

The Emmaus College student will next month follow in the footsteps of some of Hollywood's biggest names when he walks through the door at the prestigious New York Film Academy.

Mackinnley, 16, earned a month-long training scholarship to the academy by winning a national arts showcase.

He dreams of being an actor and can't imagine himself doing anything different.

"I started when I was eight, and when I began singing lessons a year later I discovered I had a real passion for it," Mackinnley said.

While at the academy in New York, he will get training and mentoring from professionals in musical theatre and dance.

"This could be my big chance, but I really want to enjoy my time in New York as well," Mackinnley said.

"I'm just going to take it as it comes, see what happens."

Mackinnley is hoping to get some sightseeing done during his time there, and even catch a few Broadway musicals.

One of Mackinnley's idols is Hugh Jackman, who has made it big overseas, in film and on Broadway.

The student hopes to make it onto the stage in the future.

"One day I dream of the chance to take to the stage on Broadway," Mackinnley said.

"I've worked really hard to get to this point, and the support I've had around me has been amazing."
