TINY chihuahuas, great Danes and every doggy in between showed off the best of their personalities in a bid to get their claws on the most prestigious canine award.

Pooches across the Sunshine Coast donned their best top hats, tuxedos, tutus and even sombreros to vie for the title of Australia's Cutest Dog.

The PETstock competition had hundreds of Coast dog owners flocking to stores in Kawana, Maroochydore and Noosa at the weekend in a bid to get their hands on the crown.

Little 12-week-old Barry was a big contender, with his chilled-out attitude and suave attire.

"He's really laid back ... he's definitely a Coast boy," owner Coleen Beekmans said of her lhasa apso pup.

"We were going to go for a bandana but decided to go with the bowtie. It has that James Bond effect."

The competition was tough at Maroochydore as Barry went up against his one-year-old sister LC - named after owners Leo and Coleen.

Other contenders included jack russell terrier-cross Bella and big fluffy samoyed-golden retriever cross pooches, Meeko and Misty.

Maroochydore PETstock's Nym Kelly said the store had more than 80 dogs and their owners come through the doors. "It's just been a lot of fun... we've had a few people adamant that their dog is the cutest," she said.

Sunshine Coast winners will be announced later in the week.
