Wayne Bennett’s future uncertain after he quits the Knights

THE NRL's most successful coach, Wayne Bennett, is a free agent, but it would be easier picking this year's grand final winner than where he will ply his trade next year.

Despite the efforts of NRL boss David Smith to get the 64-year-old to stay on at Newcastle following owner Nathan Tinkler's exit, Bennett believes it is time to move on and let someone else try to get the Knights a flag.

"I would not have lasted 28 years in the NRL if I'd have seasons like I've had here," Bennett told yesterday, confirming he would quit the Knights at the end of the season.

"For me it's about the high standards that I set myself."

Bennett said he had not spoken to any clubs about his future, but speculation suggests a return to St George-Illawarra, presently being led by interim coach Paul McGregor, would be the most likely option.

Brisbane, the club Bennett took to six NRL premierships, will no doubt also be mentioned as his next stop.
