Mertens hurt in horror Caulfield fall

Star young rider Beau Mertens was taken to hospital after he crashed to the turf with 200m to go in the sixth race at Caulfield from Orient Line.

Victorian Jockeys Association chief executive Matt Hyland said preliminary reports said Mertens was conscious and had a sore knee but they would know more after X-rays.

His former master Mick Kent said Mertens would be “surfing tomorrow�.

Mertens initially lay motionless on the turf.

Three of his friends Ben Allen, Mick Dee and Stephanie Thornton ran out on to the track to see Mertens.

Regan Bayliss lost his stirrups when his mount Miles Of Krishna almost fell in the same incident.

Chief steward Robert Cram said Orient Line clipped heels and crashed heavily at the 200m mark. Stewards have opened an inquiry into the incident,

Cram said unfortunately Orient Line could not be saved as a result of his injures had to be euthanized after the incident.

He said races had been indefinitely as they needed to clear the track.
