TODAY'S post is on one of the latest and greatest convertibles to enter on Australian shores, the 2012 McLaren MP4-12C Spider.
This beast is equipped with a mid-rear mounted 3.8-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine which can produce up to 460 kilowatts (616 horsepower) at 7500rpm and 600 Newton metres of torque (443 pound-feet of torque) at 3000rpm.
This extraordinary engine is also extremely lightweight and compact, and this helps the 12C Spider with fuel economy, a huge floor with many supercars. While cruising around the city in your new MP4-12C Spider, you can achieve 18.5 litres/100km, and on the highway you can get a whopping 7.8 litres/100km.
This is compared to the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Performante (which is slower and also has a lower top speed than the 12C), which can achieve 21.7 litres/100km in the city and 14.1 litres/100km on the highway.
Partnered to the engine is a seven-speed, dual-clutch automated manual transmission, with shifting paddles behind the steering wheel for manual control, which then sends all the power to the rear wheels. This particular MP4-12 Spider also has a curb weight of 1,474 kilograms thanks to the "Carbon Fibre MonoCell" body structure.
This makes the Spider only 40 kilograms heavier than the standard Coupe.
This allows the McLaren MP4-12C Spider to launch from 0-100 kilometres per hour in just 3.1 seconds, and it will keep accelerating until it reaches its top speed of 329 kilometres per hour (204 miles per hour).
The main rival for this beautiful machine is the Ferrari 458 Spider, and McLaren themselves claim that on paper, the MP4-12 is "better" than the Ferrari in every single mechanical way.
Power, torque, top speed, acceleration, weight, everything. It makes you think, why would you choose the more expensive 458, when you can have everything the 458 features plus more with the MP4-12C?
Some other features that this McLaren is equipped with includes 19-inch front and 20-inch rear forged alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P ZERO performance tyres, carbon fibre mirror casing and turning veins, a power retractable hardtop, a rear spoiler which also acts as an air-brake, four-wheel ABS as well as traction and stability control, dusk-sensing xenon headlights, seat belt pretensioners, electronic brake force distribution, emergency braking assist and preparation, a post-collision safety system, a leather/alcantara interior with sport seats, the interior carbon package, dual-zone climate controls and much more.
You can currently buy this exact 2012 McLaren MP4-12C Spider from McLaren Sydney for $695,500.
