Battese leads Ballina to win

ANDREW Battese led Ballina Seagulls to their second win of the season – a 38-16 road victory over the Grafton Rhinos in Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League on Sunday.

Battese played all 80 minutes after doing the same for the Northern Thunderbolts on Friday night in a representative match at Port Macquarie.

He was a standout against the Rhinos, scoring a try and kick-ing seven goals from seven attempts.

Ballina’s other Northern Thunderbolts representatives, fullback John Freeman, five-eighth Ben Crawford and second-rower Scott McLennan, also backed up from Friday night’s match, against the Rhinos.

Young props Jason Clarke and Damien Sironen controlled the game from the middle of the ruck to deliver a winning 24-4 half-time lead.

The win followed the Seagulls’ easy victory over Kyogle in round one. In reserve grade, the Rhinos were too strong, scoring a 34-12 win. Ballina’s Under-18 team picked an easy two points with a bye.

On May 16 Ballina are at home to Tweed Coast Raiders. Under-18s kick off at 1pm followed by the first-grade game.

BALLINA 38 (C Dooley, A Crawford, J Freeman, B Crawford, A Battese, S McLennan tries; A Battese 7 goals) d GRAFTON RHINOS 16 (J Ravueta 2, S Kirby tries; J Gordon, R Burley goals).
