Police say Wolvi mum’s death ‘suspicious’

A WOLVI mother has died after suffering extensive but as yet unidentified injuries during a reported serious assault at her home last week.

Police say the death of the 27-year-old is being treated as "suspicious," because of the extent of her injuries.

Detective Acting Inspector Nikki Colfs said a post mortem on the woman's body had not been completed late yesterday.

Police had maintained a crime scene at her Beenham Valley Rd home for three days and had taken a number of items from the house as potential evidence.

"We have not engaged the Homicide Squad because we are not sure about her cause of death or the full nature of her injuries," she said.

In a news release on Sunday, police said a woman had died in hospital following "an incident at a Wolvi residence" on Thursday.

"Many people are assisting police with their inquiries," Det Act Insp Colfs said yesterday.

Investigators had yet to determine if a weapon was used in the course of the assault.

Det Act Insp Colfs said police were unable to release the woman's name because her four children, all aged under seven, had yet to be informed of their mother's death.

However, The Gympie Times learned her identity from neighbours and was assured family members would have been informed by now.

Detectives from the Gympie CIB are said to have interviewed about six people about the incident, but no arrests had been made by late yesterday afternoon.

Police say she was transported to Gympie Hospital about 3.30pm Thursday, after sustaining a head injury "during a physical altercation at a Beenham Valley Rd address".

She was then conveyed by helicopter to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition, but died the following afternoon.

Detective Acting Sergeant Robert Lowry of Gympie CIB said police had questioned several people.

"At the moment police are centring inquiries around the people allegedly at the address when the incident occurred," he said.

"Some people have already been interviewed and have provided statements in relation to this but we still do have other people to speak with."
