Walker breaks world record

MIKE Gates has walked his way into a world record.

The Banora Point extreme pole walker set a new world record after walking for 48 hours, breaking his previous record of 32 hours.

“I started walking on Thursday at midday and finished walking Saturday at midday, I was physically and mentally exhausted but I was happy that I re-established the world record,” Mr Gates said.

“I walked non-stop with only a couple of few minute breaks, I usually walk on a street circuit and it was a challenge to walk all night and not be able to see any landmarks.”

Mr Gates undertook the walk to raise funds for Kids in Need. His route was a 21km loop from Kingscliff to Fingal Headland through bushland and along the banks of the Tweed River.

“We have raised in excess of $5000 and there is still money coming in.

“Kids in Need is a great charity, run by volunteers who do not retain any administration fees.” Mr Gates already has his eyes set firmly on his next target. “My next goal is to walk from the tip of Cape York to Tweed Heads in aid of men’s health,” Mr Gates said.
