Bank fees on closed account
IT might have only been $5.80, but Anthony Brock’s latest credit card bill was one that he refused to pay.
That’s because he had cancelled his account – after paying the balance in full.
The Wardell resident is furious the Commonwealth Bank sent him the statement after he transferred the balance to a different bank.
“I know it’s only a small amount of money,” Mr Brock said. “But it’s the principle of it.
“I didn’t even have a credit card or an account with that bank anymore, so why should I have to pay? It just seems totally unfair.”
Mr Brock cancelled his Commonwealth Bank Visa card on December 15, paying $1375, which was 45 cents more than what he actually owed.
But on January 12 he received a letter from the bank saying he still owed $5.80.
“There was no way I still owed that,” he said.
“They told me how much I owed and so I paid it in full and then closed the account.
“That’s why I was so surprised to get another letter from them saying I still owed money.
“It’s just not possible.”
When contacted by The Northern Star, a spokeswoman for the Commonwealth Bank admitted it had made an error.
“We made an error about the payout figure,” she said.
“So when the customer transferred the money from another bank, it appeared that it was not the full amount.
“We had not included the interest in his final statement.
“But we have now been in contact with the customer and in good faith we have agreed to waive the $5.80.
“We also apologised for his inconvenience.”
