Bangalow women's soccer team nets double victory

COMPETITION leaders Bangalow scored two wins in a double-header against arch rivals Alstonville in Far North Coast Ladies Premier Division soccer.

Alstonville played host Friday night, desperate to be the first side to take points from the competition favourites.

But the visitors proved too strong with goals from Amy Jones, Jade Bianchetti and Rose Argent together with two from Hollie Jarrett giving Bangalow a dominant 5-0 win.

The score could have been greater except for the excellent goalkeeping of Alstonville custodian Georgia Spencer, who made a number of important saves before coming off injured in the second half. Villa coach Rob Sheehan named Spencer and Erin Huntsman as his best players.

Bangalow coach Paul Hannigan nominated lively defender Tanika Hand as his best on the night.

On Sunday the teams met again at Bangalow and the home side jumped out to a three-goal lead at half time courtesy of two strikes from Bianchetti and another from Jarrett.

After the break Alstonville rallied. Lora Damen along midfielders Mattise Iliffe and Jess Woolfe starred for Villa as they posted two goals from Chelsea Coleman in a stirring fightback. Villa had the momentum and almost equalised in the final moments, but Bangalow hung on to win 3-2.

Hannigan nominated brilliant striker Bianchetti as Bangalows' best along with the experience of Christy Hopely.

"Both Jade and Hollie are in great form and we are starting to show glimpses of our premiership-winning form from 2013," Hannigan said in an ominous warning.

One of those hopeful to upset the favourites is Lismore Workers and they also took two wins from a weekend double-header against Lennox Head.

Coach Mick Smith has done a wonderful job with the promising Lennox Head ladies who have impressed with their effort and improvement.

They won 3-0 on Friday night and 4-1 Sunday.

Emily Farrington, Elsa Mangan, Serena Mangan and Madi Fiedler scored goals before the gutsy Lennox side forced a late Workers own goal.

Thistles had the bye.
