Ballina netball courts to get better lighting, new surface

BETTER lighting and now better court surfaces - the Ballina Netball Association is on a roll.

After announcing earlier this month that it would use a $25,000 State Government grant to upgrade the lights at the Owen Street courts, Ballina Shire Council has told the association executive that it will also carry out urgent repairs to its six courts.

Three asphalt courts will have an all-weather surface applied, while the sealed courts will be repaired.

Association president Kath Ellis is happy with the developments.

"This is an important step in securing the future of netball in the Ballina area," she said.

"The council recognises the role sport plays in building community spirit and encouraging healthy lifestyle habits.

"The more players we have on our courts, playing our game, the better.

"Again, congratulations to the hard-working committee which has campaigned for better facilities for Ballina netball."

With work on the courts expected to start this week and estimated to take about 10 days, all six courts will be unavailable.

The start of the winter competition season, scheduled for this Saturday, has been put back a week to March 28.
