Ballina council pushes for NSW Govt to back cash for cans

BALLINA Shire councillors will continue to push for a "cash for cans" scheme to be implemented in NSW.

At the last meeting, councillors unanimously supported a motion from Cr Jeff Johnson to write to NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell, Environment Minister Robyn Parker and Ballina MP Don Page to urge them to support and implement container deposit legislation.

"It's no surprise that South Australia has the nation's highest rates of recycling - a container deposit scheme has been in place since 1975," Cr Johnson said.

"It's clear that a container deposit scheme in NSW would reduce litter, landfill and increase recycling rates.

"It's frustrating that a simple legislative change is not being introduced when there are clear benefits to local councils and the environment."

Ballina Shire Council has twice supported motions calling for a "cash for cans" scheme.
