Hat-trick shows Kable can score goals as well as block them
PADDY Kable has proved his prowess in stopping goals - now he has started bagging a few as well.
Kable fired a hat-trick as his Lismore Workers side kicked off its competitive season with a crushing 4-0 victory at Lennox Head Sharks on Sunday.
The 18-year-old has been with the club for about five years and has established a reputation as one of the league's most solid back line players.
He was pushed forward in an attacking right-sided role against the Sharks - and impressed his fellow Workers strikers with some devastating finishing.
"Maybe I showed them a thing or two today," he said with a smile.
"Hopefully I can keep the form up.
"I don't know if it's anything permanent but I'm happy to play - and happy to score."
After a tight first half, Workers ran out comfortable winners at a hot and windy Skennars Head Playing Fields.
Striker Shaun McDonald was also on target as Workers joined fellow Football FNC representative Casino Cobras in round two of the $10,000 competition.
Kable said his club was determined to regain its pre-eminence as the region's top Premier Division club.
Workers missed out on silverware last year, with Lismore Thistles dominating the regular season and Byron Bay Rams winning the grand final.
"We will have a few players back this season from our premiership side," Kable said. "That should help us.
"Last year we just seemed to have constant injuries. We couldn't get on a roll.
"Hopefully we can keep everyone fit this time and have a good go."
EIGHTH COREY NEW CUP
LISMORE Workers are now preparing for this year's eighth annual Corey New Cup.
The day, which pits Workers against Goonellabah, is in honour of the soccer-loving junior who was killed in a 2006 car crash.
Two matches will be contested at Goonbellabah's Weston Park and all spectators are welcome.
A canteen will be open and a barbecue and raffle will be held.
All funds from the day, which takes place on Sunday, February 23, will be split between the two clubs' junior sides.
The games will be played at 3pm and 5pm.
