Australia to take lead role on UNSC

AUSTRALIA will take the lead role on the United Nations Security Council in relation to the Taliban, with Foreign Minister Bob Carr hoping to take on the global arms trade treaty which has, to date, failed to get universal approval.

After securing the temporary seat on the UNSC, Senator Carr said the sanction committee had given Australia the authority to lead UN sanctions against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

While he said the move was a reflection of Australia's high standing on the council, he said Australia would be pushing for a global arms trade treaty - to prevent illegal imports of weapons.

Such a treaty has long been on the UNSC agenda, but has failed to gain the unanimity it needed to pass.
